In the extreme environment of Antarctica there is a need for lightweight modular buildings for transportable field research stations whose energy requirements can be totally met from renewable sources. Victoria University of Wellington is collaborating with Antarctica New Zealand on the development of designs for such transportable Polar Field Research Stations  and new infrastructure technology to support scientific research programmes at remote locations. It is the aim of Antarctica New Zealand to embody maximum use of renewable energy sources with the aim of achieving a carbon free operation in the field by 2010, especially for parties operating in the Antarctic Dry Valleys.
